Lost audio ! HELP! Maybe can recover?

So I thought I had saved the audio file last night as an mp3 only to find this morning that all I had was an .aup audacity project file that is blank and doesnt play. there is also a folder with 5 subfolders that look like they might have bits and pieces of the audio? i am not sure.

what I think may have happened is this morning i recorded some very short audio clips to supplement what i did last night and I think I might hsave saved that over the larger original.

any help is greatly appreciated and if I have to re-record its all good - this was my first attempt in launching my podcast first episode.

with gratitude,

There are two parts to an Audacity project. There’s an “AUP” file (Audacity project file), and there’s a “_data” folder.
The “_data” folder contains the audio data.
The “AUP” file tells Audacity how to assemble the audio data to recreate the project.
More details here: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/audacity_projects.html

To create a normal audio file (such as a WAV or MP3), you need to “Export”. See: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/exporting_audio.html

thank you steve!!! so is there any way for me to convert those data files into an mp3 ? thats my raw footage injust don’t know how to recover it for playback/editing.

thanks again.

much gratitude,

If you have both parts of the project (the AUP file and the _data folder), then:

  1. Launch Audacity
  2. From the “File” menu, select “Open” and select the (AUP) project file. The project should then open.
  3. “File menu > Export > Export as MP3”.

See here for a description of the MP3 options: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/mp3_export_options.html

thank you so much Steve! it worked - I got it back!
