severe audio distortion on playback

Help for Audacity on macOS.

severe audio distortion on playback

macOS version: Catalina 10.15.7 (19H2)
Audacity version: 2.4.2
I have been using audacity for months but just about a month ago my audio became slow and distorted on playback to the point its unhearable, if someone could give me tips on how to fix this it would be great, thanks for reading.
