Something happened- All of a sudden I can't edit in multiple stereo tracks a gray out section with little clocks appears on the upper or lower track and I can't edit anymore. I trashed all existing versions of audacity and reinstalled a fresh copy. The problem persists.
HELP I love the software and rely on it for projects.

You've accidentally enabled "Sync-Lock". Disable it in "Tracks menu" (assuming that you are using a reasonably recent version of Audacity).
