Another day going crazy in front of my computer.
I inadvertently 'upgraded' to Catalina and found I could not record. I followed the work around by going to

Applications > Utilities
Launched Terminal App, typed in open /Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity
and it worked, for several weeks.
Then I had to shut down Audacity and the terminal and now i can't repeat the operation.

I open Terminal, and type in open /Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity and nothing happens. I've tried to open Audacity by clicking on the logo, and it opens, but will not record. When I close the Terminal, what I have typed disappears.
Audacity is in my Applications folder, by the way.

When I do open the terminal this is what I see. What is zsh? I looked it up on Apple's site, but it makes no sense to me. I must add that if I close the Terminal, the 'open /Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity' disappears. By the way, I assume the space between open and / is supposed to be there. I have typed it in with and without the space to no avail.

The default interactive shell is now zsh.
To update your account to use zsh, please run `chsh -s /bin/zsh`.

Bobs-iMac:~ britthallquist$ open /Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity

Just to be clear - when I open my Terminal this is what I see:
Last login: Thu Apr 16 10:53:55 on ttys000

The default interactive shell is now zsh.
To update your account to use zsh, please run `chsh -s /bin/zsh`.

Bobs-iMac:~ britthallquist$ open /Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity
Bob

Is Audacity supposed to open after I have typed it? It doesn't.

OK, fixed it. I right clicked on Terminal when it was in the Dock. Then clicked upon New Command, inserted the " open /Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity" in the box that opened up, and Bingo!

There is an easier way.
  • Edit /Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity.sh

    Code: Select all

    vi /Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity.sh

  • Replace the line that says exec "$dir/Audacity" with open "$dir/Audacity", so that the file contents look like the following:

    Code: Select all

    #!/bin/sh
    #
    # The purpose of this script is to give the user more control over where libraries
    # such as Lame and FFmpeg get loaded from.
    #
    # Since absolute pathnames are used when loading these libraries, the normal search
    # path would be DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH, absolute path, DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH. This
    # means that DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH can override what the user actually wants.
    #
    # So, we simply clear DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH to allow the users choice to be the first
    # one tried.
    #

    DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH="$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH:$DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH:$HOME/lib:/usr/local/lib:/usr/lib"
    export DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH

    DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=""
    export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH

    dir=$(dirname "$0")
    /opt/X11/bin/xterm "$dir/Audacity"

My launcher app is slightly different.

1. First, download Audacity and move the app into any folder other than the "Applications" folder. As you will see later, this will prevent you from getting both the actual app and the launcher app we're going to create in the Launchpad. For this example, I just put Audacity into my home folder.

2. Fire up script editor and paste in the following AppleScript code:

Code: Select all

if application "Audacity" is not running then do shell script "~/Apps/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity > /dev/null 2>&1 &"
activate application "Dock"
tell application "System Events" to click UI element "Audacity" of list 1 of process "Dock"
3. Next, export this script to an application. We need to give it a name other than "Audacity" so our launcher doesn't get confused. I called my launcher app "Audacity Mac"

4. Next, select your newly created launcher app in Finder, right click, and select "Show package contents." Then, open the file "Contents/info.plist" in TextEdit. After the first line marked <dict>, add the following:

Code: Select all

<key>LSUIElement</key>
<true/>
This will prevent you seeing the launcher app in the dock.

5. Next, can you optionally change the icon of our launcher app to the Audacity icon as described earlier in this thread.

6. Finally, move the launcher app to your Applications folder and it will appear in your Launchpad. If you run the launcher while Audacity is already running, it will simply activate the Audacity window. If not, it will run the special shell command to launch Audacity before activating the window.

There are many ways to skin a cat; this is but one of them. :)
