I just upgraded to Catalina and bought a USB turntable, the audIo technical LP5. I’m having exactly the same issue. However, I also seem to not be able to have GarageBand hear the device either. Does anyone know if you have to connect the USB and the RCA cables? Fire and RCA to jack adapter? Or should just the USB cable suffice?

If you are using an Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB, make sure to put the vinyl player in Line mode as opposed to Phono... At the back of the vinyl player there is a small switch. I was having the same issue, a flat line recording even with the terminal work-around. Switch to Line mode and open the app through the teminal code. It worked for me on Catalina 10.15.2
