How to constrain selection size to specific duration?

Hi.

Please tell me how to limit/constrain a given selection within a sample to a particular length.

For instance, if I need a selection that is precisely one second, but I'm not sure where its start point needs to be, how can I quickly select precisely one second's worth of sound in the audio track box and then move it left or right 'til I've found just the right start point?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you for reading my post!
