Audacity Software question/s

Old guy newbie here. Purchased an Anders Nicholson 2655MMO a few years back with Audacity software and finally getting the chance to use it. I noticed your note above about the 1.2.x, 1.3.x software, which appears that I have. Currently I have two computers, one with W XP and one with W 7. Can I use the 1.2.6 software on both or is that the reason for the 2.x.x software for the Windows 7 and above OS? Also, not sure I should ask this next question here or on a different forum. I did a copy of one of my albums to disk, which worked fine, but I have a question on finalizing. It seems to take as long to finalize as it took to record. Is this correct?

There's nothing to stop you using Audacity 1.2.6, but if you have problems then you're on your own. There would certainly have been some bugs (as there are in all but very simple programs, but it's so long since I've used 1.2.6 (many years) that I don't recall what issues there were.

The current version of Audacity is 2.2.1, and it is available (free) via the Audacity website: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/

The current version of Audacity will not work on Windows XP. Audacity 2.1.3 is the final version to officially support Windows XP.
XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, and we are not able to offer support for XP, though there is some information on this page: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/legacy-windows/
It is very much recommended that you don't connect an XP machine to the Internet as XP is dangerously insecure.

I don't know what you mean by "finalize", but probably better to ask that in a separate post if you experience the problem in Audacity 2.2.1.

Actually 2.2.1 runs fine on my old XP desktop (which is air-gapped isolated from the interweb)

I moved the necessary installation files from my web-connect W10 laptop onto a USB stick and installed from that on the XP desktop.

The issue is that we, as Steve rightly says, no longer support it on XP.

I presume that you mean "XP SP3" (which is a different beast from the original "XP").

Thanks for the reply. I use XP sp3 for things other than the internet, so it doesn't get connected to the outside world. OK, 2.2.1 for ANYTHING above Windows XP and 2.1.3 is the last of that breed.

On the finalize question, my guess is it doesn't have anything to do with Audacity software but rather the Anders Nicholson unit I am using the software for/on. When a CD is recorded to, say, from an album in my case, in order for it, the CD, to play on other CD units it has to be finalized or the "other" CD players won't see it, recognize it etc. Hmmm...off to figure this out. Thanks WC. I can download both software programs and see what works best for both my OS systems. Yes, I don't connect at all with XP SP3. My grand kids like playing a lot of the older games.

There are provisions for stopping CD production with the idea of adding to it later. I've never done that.

There are different CDs. The disk has to look like a correct Audio CD for other players to accept it. Some players "know" what a Data CD with MP3 files on it is and other CD formats. But if I sit down in Lori (my lorry) with anything other than a correctly finalized Audio CD, it's just going to look at me like I'm daft.

Yes. I'm having that issue right now. I figured out what I was doing wrong to finalize the disk after recording. It's funny. I have a Pioneer component system I bought while I was living in the UK while in the USAF 79-82 and added a Sharpe cd player to that and the disk won't play on it, but will play on everything else in the house. Amazing.
