I am a newbie to Audacity and I noticed when I import a file (wav or mp3) it is compressed in the editing area compared to when I was recording it. Is there a key combination the will expand the complete file?

and the exact three-section version number of Audacity from "Help menu > About Audacity".

I think you may be looking for "zoom" http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/zooming.html
My preferred way of zooming in and out is "Ctrl + Mouse Wheel"
