I’m trying to upload audio files from a recorder to my audacity program but it’s only recording the sounds from my external microphone one my computer and not from the usb connection attached to my recorder? Do I need to reset something somewhere in the program? I’m new to all of this, so I’m lost?

Depending on what it is, it could just be you started things in the wrong order. Plug everything in and make sure everything is working, then start Audacity. You should be able to find a USB “Something” listed in the Audacity Device Toolbar.
