Subtract channel A from channel B to make channel C
W10, V2.1.3, exe installer: I use Audacity to capture old LP music and ClickRepair to clean up the captured stereo track. I now have A=captured stereo LP, B=ClickRepair output. I want to make C = A - B. I know you can invert B and listen to A-B but I want to capture and see the waveform of C. This should be simple but I cannot find how other than start another recording program while listening to A - B. I have considered Nyquist but only see how do "Effect" or "Generate". Needs "Effect" and "Generate". Any advice will be appreciated.

Digital audio is just numbers.
This is me saying "hi":
Each of those numbers is a "sample value". That is, the distance above (+ve values) or below (-ve values) the centre line of the waveform at successive moments in time:
"Mixing" two tracks is literally just adding two lists of numbers together.
Select two tracks, then "Tracks menu > Mix and Render", adds the first number of both lists together, then adds the second number of each list together, and so on.
"Inverting" (Effect menu > Invert) literally turns the waveform upside down. Each positive number in the list becomes a negative number, and each negative number becomes a positive number.
So mixing track A with track B can be written as:
A[1, 2, 3, ... n] + B[1, 2, 3, ... n] = [A[1]+B[1], A[2]+B[2[, A[3]+B[3], ... A[n]+B[n]]
Inverting a track can be written as:
A[1, 2, 3, ... n] -> [-A[1], -A[2], -A[3], ... -A[n]]
Inverting one track and mixing it with another track can be written as:
A[1, 2, 3, ... n] + B[1, 2, 3, ... n] = [A[1]-B[1], A[2]-B[2[, A[3]-B[3], ... A[n]-B[n]]

"Mixing" two tracks is literally just adding two lists of numbers together.
Select two tracks, then "Tracks menu > Mix and Render", adds the first number of both lists together, then adds the second number of each list together, and so on.
"Inverting" (Effect menu > Invert) literally turns the waveform upside down. Each positive number in the list becomes a negative number, and each negative number becomes a positive number.
So mixing track A with track B can be written as:
A[1, 2, 3, ... n] + B[1, 2, 3, ... n] = [A[1]+B[1], A[2]+B[2[, A[3]+B[3], ... A[n]+B[n]]
Inverting a track can be written as:
A[1, 2, 3, ... n] -> [-A[1], -A[2], -A[3], ... -A[n]]
Inverting one track and mixing it with another track can be written as:
A[1, 2, 3, ... n] + B[1, 2, 3, ... n] = [A[1]-B[1], A[2]-B[2[, A[3]-B[3], ... A[n]-B[n]]

W10,V2.1.3: Thanks for pointing out how to subtract two tracks. Now I have a further request. To effectively generate a residual signal (difference) you need to apply the same scale factors to the two tracks. Normalization adjusts the levels but it cannot be applied to two different tracks and be assured the same factor will be used for both. So, it would be useful if the normalization algorithm could report back the scale factors it computed and applied to the two stereo channels. Then those factors could be applied to the other channel using the Channel Mixer algorithm. Another very useful addition would be to display the value of a selected sample, possibly in the space down where Selection Starts, End, Length, etc. are reported. Right now it appears to me the only way to see the numeric value of a sample is to export a bit of the data with "Sample data export". That is cumbersome to say the least. Jim

That is a feature request. Do you want to record a "vote" for that so we can take the amount of user interest into account? The usual request is to hover over the sample to see a tooltip showing the amplitude.
