This should be simple: I want to know a straightforward way to move the cursor from the start of a track to a particular time position, such as 6 mins 54 secs. How, please?

Type the required time position into the Selection Toolbar "Selection Start" box. http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/sele ... olbar.html
If you can't see the start of the selection after doing that, press "Ctrl + [" (hold down the Ctrl key and press the left square bracket key). This is the keyboard shortcut for:
"View menu >Go to Selection Start"
