The only other issue I have with audacity (2.12) is that it says it cannot see my avformat-52.dll. But mp3 is good enough. Also tried 53. Tells me “failed to find compatible FFmpeg libraries”. Even dropped them into c:\

As this is unrelated to your topic about orphaned block files in long projects, I started a new topic for you.
If you have upgraded to 2.1.2 from earlier than 2.0.6, you need to download the later FFmpeg 2.2.2 according to this FFmpeg FAQ.
Use the FFmpeg 2.2.2 installer "ffmpeg-win-2.2.2.exe", do not change the installation path then 2.1.2 should detect the new FFmpeg automatically.
