Headphone delay

Post by michaelwadams » Sat Oct 08, 2016 12:31 am

Windows 7; Audacity 2.1.0
I have a Yeti Blue USB microphone that also has a headphone jack for monitoring. The headphone jack audio is delayed., whether using Audacity or not. What is wrong with my setup?

The Yeti instructions tell me the headphone system is designed to automatically mix your live voice correctly with the computer playback. I believe them. That's how many microphones and interfaces work. What kills you is when you set the computer to record your voice, but then send it back to the Yeti. That voice gets there one computer late. Voice going into the computer and then coming back out again. Both directions take time.

That setting is very common. That's the setting to make your computer record YouTube, Web Music or other Internet Content.

Those settings are forbidden when you want to overdub your voice in a song or do other production. I have no idea what those settings are for you because I'm not a Windows elf.

This is the system you're changing. We wrote instructions to make it so you can record YouTube, but not how to stop.

Turn Transport > Software Playthrough off in Audacity, and turn "Listen to this device" off for the Yeti in Windows Sound. To do that, right-click over the speaker icon by the system clock, then choose "Recording Devices". Right-click over the Yeti, then choose "Properties". Then click the "Listen" tab and make sure "Listen to this device" is not checked (not ticked).

Then you should hear what you are singing or speaking into the Yeti without delay. If you don't, contact Blue who make the mic.

By the way, the current version of Audacity is 2.1.2: http://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows.
