no waveform or recording

I'm trying to record and there's no waveform but just a straight line. Why can't I record - it didn't have this problem before.

What are you trying to record from? From the microphone built into your laptop? An external analog mic? A USB mic? Streaming audio? Something else?
Make sure you're selected the correct
Recording Device.

I'm recording from my computer. I use speakers and a headphone.

This tutorial explains how to record audio playing on the computer:

Unless you have Windows XP, the best method of recording computer playback is the Windows WASAPI method mentioned in the above tutorial.
If you need more help, please tell us what version of Windows you have and what version of Audacity (see the pink panel at the top of the page). We cannot help you if you don't tell us that.
