project file - can't open - data file problem

Post by lee-audio » Tue Aug 16, 2016 2:57 pm

I can't open my project file, because the "project data" file has apparently been corrupted. I'm getting a pop-up dialogue box with several options to get back in without getting all my unsaved changes. But should I try "Treat missing audio as silence" (this session or permanently) Almost all, if not all my changes were "deletes" - so I should think that treating all these changes as 'silence' would be fine with me. However, I don't want to push buttons without knowing the consequences - or if pushing these buttons will actually get me back in to continue my project. Help please.

Do you know why the data is missing? If you have a really old version of Audacity it could be an Audacity bug. When you have resolved the problem, make sure you have the latest Audacity 2.1.2 from http://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows.

Don't choose "Treat missing audio as silence (permanent immediately)" until you are sure the missing files cannot be found.

The best way to look for the files is to click "Show Log for Details". You can do that without choosing "Treat missing audio as silence (this session only)" . It does not matter if you have clicked that "this session only" option, but that option won't in itself bring your audio back.

The log will show you the names of the AU block files that are missing and exactly which folder they should be in. You could use the option in the log to save as a TXT file, then you could print it out if you wanted. After that you can't do any more in Audacity. Just choose File > Close.

When you put your AU files back where they should be, launch Audacity and all the blue waves should come back.

If you need help understanding the log file, please attach it to your reply. Please see here for how to attach files: http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 49&t=64936.

When you put your AU files back where they should be
Where might they have gone? Is this scrambling a preventable action?
