How do i record with my microphone.
I can't figure out how to get out of my computers built in microphone and onto the one I bought for recording. I'm trying to hook up a Shure SM57 through a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 sound interface to my Toshiba laptop.

Re: How do i record with my microphone.
There may be some interaction problem with the Scarlett and Win10. We need to wait for a Windows elf for that.
I think the order is important.
Plug the Scarlett USB in and make sure the little green USB light comes on.
Switch 48V off if it isn't already.
Plug the microphone in channel 1. It should be possible to turn the Mic-1 gain up, speak into the microphone and get the green knob surround light to come on. It should be possible to yell with the control all the way up and get that light to turn red. That's an intentional overload condition just for testing. It doesn't harm anything and it's good to know the red light system works.
Start or Restart Audacity. It should be possible to find the microphone in the Audacity Device Toolbar.

I have no idea what it's going to say. The USB connection never says what you think it's going to. USB Audio CODEC?
Press record and you should get a stereo show (two blue waves) with your voice on the top wave and nothing on the bottom.
Where do you lose it?

Re: How do i record with my microphone.
Please note that the 2i2 is a forced stereo device. I don't think it will connect in mono (consult your instructions). So as far as I know, you can't record a mono production such as an audiobook or guitar solo directly.
It's not hard to get there. Use the drop-down menu to the left and Split Stereo to Mono. Delete the silent track.
This also makes it difficult to overdub/sound-on-sound because you're always playing to Left of a stereo show.
Again, consult your instructions. I do not own a 2i2.

Re: How do i record with my microphone.
I see from the 2i2 manual they supply a software package. I don't know what the interaction between the software drivers and Audacity is. Time for the Windows elves [backing away carefully].
