v2.1.1 Crashes After Opening Several MP3 Files

Post by Zian Choy » Mon Dec 14, 2015 12:06 am

I have some MP3 files that have the wrong length. I noticed that if I opened them in Audacity and exported them as a WAV file, then Audacity would correct the length. Unfortunately, it seems that after doing this to about 3 or 4 files, Audacity crashes.

Sometimes, it generates a debug report and other times it doesn't and the Windows Error Reporting service (aka Dr. Watson) steps in.

Is this sort of problem worth reporting as a bug? I know the classic phrase is "Garbage in, garbage out" but I don't know if "garbage out" should include Audacity completely crashing.

Details:
- Audacity version 2.1.1 installed from the EXE installer
- Windows 7 x64
- Input audio: "Microphone Array (Realtek High Definition)"
- Output audio: "Speakers (I'm Fulla Schiit)"

I can provide sample files if desired but would have to e-mail them or provide them in some sort of private fashion rather than attaching it to this post.

I have some MP3 files that have the wrong length.
How were they made? Show tunes? Broadway Musicals?
in some sort of private fashion rather than attaching it to this post.
That's going to limit the ability to solve the problem. The idea of the forum is to expose a problem to as many people as possible with the idea that someone is going to know the answer. It's a volunteer forum. Nobody is going to shuffle a sample file between the forum elves Sub Rosa until somebody hits it. That's way too much work.

Create a new damaged file that you can post.

Ideally Audacity would not crash but the problem may be nothing to do with those files. Can you attach the ZIP file that the Debug Report generates? See http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/he ... .html#data.

If the MP3 files do not play the correct length it may be better to repair them directly. See for example MP3 Diags and MP3val.

You could private message (PM) me and attach an example file (I have enabled PM's for you). However the attachment limit is 2 MB. We could arrange some e-mail transfer but transfer of larger attachments by e-mail depends on the ISP and mail client. You could post the file on a private server and PM the address, perhaps.
