I have recorded some old radio progs which are very woolly and need to be clarified. I have opened Effects>Bass/Treble adjust, set the meter to what I want, checked Preview which was fine, then the OK button. The `Adjusting Bass and Treble` window appears with the progress bar already about three quarters greened out, with Elapsed Time counting up from zero, and Remaining Time very slowly counting. After about 2 hours or more, (it is quite a long project) the progress bar becomes fully green and window closes. I checked the project but it remained unchanged from it`s original audio state with Effects>Bass and Treble both back to zero. Any idea where I`m going wrong? Many thanks.

You're using a very old version of Audacity. The current version is Audacity 2.1.1 which you can get here: http://web.audacityteam.org/download/windows

My first suggestion would be to retry with the current version of Audacity. I'd suggest that you remove your old version first, then install the new version using the recommended installer (.exe) version. During the installation, look for the option to "reset preferences", and select that option. On first run after installing you will be asked to confirm that you want to reset preferences - confirm that you do want to.
