Nothing in the manual is what I see with the program open
I have Windows 10 on my laptop. I installed the software and retrieved the User Manual. I've read the User Manual twice and I simply cannot find what I need. Following the manual I double clicked the shortcut to Audacity and then clicked on Edit and scrolled down to choose Preferences. THAT is where it becomes a problem. According to the manual, the Preferences screen looks a particular way...mine looks nothing like it. It says to set recording device to USB Audio Device but there is no such option. That's the very 1st step...what do I do when it isn't the same? Lastly, how can I know what version of your software I have?

Help > About?
We're expecting a three-digit number like 2.1.1.
Did you get it from here?

If Windows can't see your USB device, Audacity can't see it either. Right-click the speaker icon and select Recording Devices to check if Windows sees whatever USB device you've got connected. The name of the device you see depends on the drivers and on how it identifies itself to Windows, so you may not see exactly what the manual says.It says to set recording device to USB Audio Device but there is no such option.
(I don't have Win10, so I'm guessing you can right-click on the speaker icon to bring-up the audio control panel.)
Also, if your computer didn't come with Win10 and you upgraded, make sure you have Win10 compatible audio drivers for your particular hardware.

Also, if you connected the USB device after you launched Audacity, do Transport > Rescan Audio Devices in the Audacity menu bar, so that Audacity can detect the newly added device.

You still can. The only difference is that if you left-click the speaker icon, the volume slider doesn't now contain a link to the volume mixer where you can set volume levels for each app. The Volume Mixer is now a right-click option over the speaker icon.DVDdoug wrote:(I don't have Win10, so I'm guessing you can right-click on the speaker icon to bring-up the audio control panel.)

Re: Nothing in the manual is what I see with the program ope
Ok, took me a bit but I know my software version is version 47.1A. At least that's what it says on the mini-disc. Is there some place else I can find that info? The software came with the unit.
How do I make sure I have Win10 compatible audio drivers for my particular hardware?
And, once I connect the device to my laptop, how do I do Transport > Rescan Audio Devices in the Audacity menu bar, so that Audacity can detect the newly added device?
PLEASE forgive me my ignorance and me density in technological things?

I explained this in your previous topic. 47.1A will be the CD version number, nothing to do with the Audacity version number.strshne420 wrote:Ok, took me a bit but I know my software version is version 47.1A. Check in Help > About Audacity... top right of the Audacity window. If it doesn't say Audacity 2.1.1, get 2.1.1 from http://audacityteam.org/download/windows.

Does this page help?
Here is the Audacity 2.1.1 manual. Or, simply open Audacity and click Help -> Manual.
If Windows can't see the device, you've probably got a driver problem. Or, you've got dead hardware, or a bad USB cable, or something...
Typically, USB audio devices are "plug-and- play" with the generic Microsoft-supplied drivers. If there's no driver installation on the CD, that's a clue that it's designed to use Microsoft's drivers. Otherwise, you'll have to check the hardware manufacturer's website.

That's not surprising if you are looking at the (probably outdated) printed manual that doesn't match the (probably outdated) software supplied with your hardware.I downloaded and installed 2.1.1 and it still looks nothing like the pics in the manual

Re: Nothing in the manual is what I see with the program ope
Presumably the USB device is the "Cassette capture" device referred to in the user's previous topic.
If you connected the cassette player after launching Audacity, look in the Audacity menu bar at the top of the screen and use Transport > Rescan Audio Devices.
Then click in the Recording device and choose the USB Audio CODEC for the cassette deck. It should say USB "something".

Gale Andrews...did you look at the screenshot I attached? There is no such option! The option I'm to choose according to the manual and whatever you said are NOT options in the software I have.
Let me attach it again.
