(extracting music from DVD) It's been a while
since I have been on here and the things everyone taught me are buried on my old Win XP computer. I am now on windows 7. Situation: I rented a DVD, Johnny Tremain, and I want to extract the music from the DVD by listening, erasing voice (however you do that - moving back and forth), save what's left (the music), and make an audio CD. Is there a tutorial that might cover that? Or how should I approach it. The disc reader on this cpu will read cd and/or dvd. thanks

Almost all commercial DVDs are copy protected and since it's illegal to crack the copy protection I'm pretty sure we're not supposed to discuss that here. There are programs for ripping DVDs and a couple of them are free, but you'll have to search the Internet.
There are programs specifically for extracting the audio from a DVD, but I don't know if any are free.
If the DVD is not copy protected, or if you have successfully decrypted it and made a copy of the DVD files (VOB files) on your hard drive I would proceed as follows:
Use VOB2MPG (free) to convert the 1GB VOB files to one-long MPEG-2 movie file. (Or your ripping program may give you the option to convert from the DVD file structure to another format.)
Then using Audacity (with the optional FFMPEG import/export library) you can open the MPEG file and load the audio into Audacity for editing/processing.
That's another issue. Of course you can cut & splice but you can't "un-mix" the voice from the music or sound effects. There is a Vocal Removal effect, but it basically removes everything in the "center".erasing voice (however you do that - moving back and forth), save what's left (the music), and make an audio CD.
