love the free program, but why are all the effect presets so far out of range, like gverb?

I noticed that. I advanced the idea many moons ago that the settings should have to do with room size and type of wallpaper, not a programming or algorithm value. Unless I miss my guess, the default echo and reverb settings don't have any relation to a normal room anywhere on earth. I remember trying to recreate the echo of a performance hall. I can tell you the exact dimensions of the room and the composition of the surfaces.

I gave up.

GVerb was not intended to be a full-blown user effect, rather it was intended as a building block for developers to build an effect around it. GVerb was distributed with old versions of Audacity because it worked on all platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X) and it was available under a license that was compatible with Audacity's license (GPL v2), and provided a useful stop-gap measure in the absence of a better reverb effect.

GVerb is no longer shipped with Audacity as it has been superseded by a new built-in Reverb effect: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/reverb.html
