Audacity 2.1 has removed the playback speed slider from the interface. How do I get it back?
It was a very useful feature I made great use of.

It's still there, but you may have accidentally hidden it.
To reset the toolbars to their defaults:
"View menu > Toolbars > Reset Toolbars"
To reset the toolbars to their defaults:

My apologies. For some reason I was running v1.2.6! I have no idea how; I never installed it. I'm not even sure where one would get such an old version now.
Re-installing v2.1.0 fixed everything.
I'm humbled, and a little bemused....
