Recording volume jumps

Help for Audacity on Windows.

Recording volume jumps

Hi Folks,

I did do a search on this and also checked out the FAQ section, but I cannot seem to find an answer.

My problem is 2 fold)

1 - Is there a way to set a default recording level? I keep setting mine to 22, but it always defaults back to 30 (which when I laugh just makes all sorts of distortion noises)

2 - I will set the level to 2, then half way through a recording in a full screen game, I will tab back to find its jumped back to 30 and I have horrible peaking waves :(

Is there anything I can do here? I've no idea why it keeps jumping back to 30 mid recording but its quite frustrating. I have trawled the preferences sections but see no sign of it!

Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Games and Skype grab sound services with a clenched fist and don't let go. It generally doesn't matter what Audacity wants, it usually loses.

As near as we can tell, FRAPS is the way to go for game recording.

Well I'm currently using open broadcast software for the recording...and I record the audio with audacity. Its odd though because when I'm playing heroes of the storm for example, I'll quickly tab back in the beginning and see its still set to 22. But at some point during the game, its moved to 30 and ruined my audio.

Is there nothing I can do to give audacity the highest permission? :(

What are you recording in Audacity - your commentary or the game audio? You can record both in FRAPS.

Whichever input you are recording in Audacity, the input level moves if the system slider for that input moves, whether Windows or another application moves the slider.

You didn't say what version of Windows or Audacity - see the pink panel at the top of the page. If you are on Windows 7 or Windows 8 it may help to open Windows Sound ( http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... es#vistacp ) and click the main Communications tab. Under "When Windows detects communications activity:", choose "Do nothing".

Other than that, what do OBS say about it?
