Utter novice seeks help joining files.

Hi there.
I was stupidly using a very old version, not realising updates were available etc.
Having just recorded a 4hr mix which I was pretty happy with the app crashed when I stopped recording.
I was able to save the results but it's now split into thousands of 6 second AU files.
I was hoping there was a way to join these with relative ease???
Can anyone offer advice or help? (I now run the latest version )

Please answer the questions in the pink panel completely including version of Windows. Unless you obtained Audacity 2.0.6 from http://audacityteam.org/download/windows you may not have the latest version.

Do you have the AUP file? If so, open it and will piece as many AU files together as it knows about.

If you only have the AU files and no AUP, you have to follow Recovering crashes manually. If you were using a 1.2 version of Audacity you're in luck, because you won't have to do the renaming of AU files that it mentions there, just the recovery to WAV files with the 1.2 Recovery Utility.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply.
Unfortunately I don't have the AUP file, just AU & AUF files.
When I try to add the AU files to a new project they just stack up in 6 second files one below the other.
My question is, is there a way to join them together so they play as one long file rather than them all playing at the same time (over the top of each other) as I can only seem to achieve at the moment.

The proper way to do that is to open the AUP file with Audacity. The AUP file contains a list of instructions for Audacity that tell it what to do with all of those .AU files. The AUP file is an essential part of a saved Audacity project.

As you don't have the AUP file, the chances are that you will not be able to recover the project.

When you say you were able to save the AU and AUF files, was this because they were in Audacity's temporary folder?

If you had never edited this recording then it is recoverable with patience (in 1 GB sections) by following http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/re ... ually.html. The only problem would be that if it was a stereo recording, some blocks of audio that should be in the right may be in the left and vice-versa.

If there are AUF files in there, that suggests you were editing the project along with imported files. The 1.2 Recovery Utility that you use for the "manual recovery" doesn't understand AUF files, and if you were editing, the AU files are no longer ordered in a sequence along the timeline, so can't be usefully recovered.

If you were recording into a project that had imported files, then that new recording crashed, you "might" be able to recover the recording from the latest AU files in the project. Without knowing what you were doing, it's impossible to say.
