Setting the Save Project Default file location
I try keep as much out of the C: (OS) partitition as possible. Especially data files.
In Preferences, I set the Working (Temp) folder to the D: partition. (D:AudacityTemp)
I tried modifying the audacity.cfg file to have "Save Project" default to a folder on the D: partition (D:AudacityProjects)
Now when I save the first project of the day, the program requires that I locate the default folder (D:AudacityProject) for the initial save.
As long as the Audacity stays open, additional "Save Projects" go directly to the (D:AudacityProject).
What is the correct syntax to use in the .cfg file and which line should contain it that will cause Save Project to be saved to D:AudacityProjects from start-up.?
I am using both Win 7-32 and 8.1-64.

Re: Setting the Save Project Default file location
Did you try the plain vanilla File > Save As and change the directory and drive? Audacity defaults to saving stuff in the program folder on my machines, so I had to get rid of that in a hurry. Does the D: drive come and go? Is it always mounted on the machine? Audacity doesn't much like drive acrobatics.

Mine gets half-way there. It goes to the right drive but not the right folder. Is that what you're complaining about?

Re: Setting the Save Project Default file location
The Save Project directory is actually a Windows Registry setting and cannot currently be set in audacity.cfg. See http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 50#p177450 and on to the end of that topic.
You "should" be able to force the directory by preloading the Registry entry with your desired save location, using a batch file each time you launch Audacity.
If you want to "vote" for a default Save Project directory, then you can do so by replying here and we will take the "vote" into account.

Re: Setting the Save Project Default file location
This is to Gale....
I vote YES to adding an option in the Preferences that would allow the user to select the "Save Project" Default File Location.
Having to load a Batch file into the Registry every time you start Audacity doesn't seem like a good solution to me.
You allow the user to select in the Installation Folder Location...why not the Save Project location.

Re: Setting the Save Project Default file location
I just came across this thread while trying to find out how to set the default Project Save directory. If votes are still being counted, please add mine to the "Add this to Preferences" tally!

Re: Setting the Save Project Default file location
May I add my vote? I'm using a freshly-installed (via .exe) Audacity 2.1.3 on Windows 10. I've moved my Documents folder from the C: drive to D: (in Windows - I've changed its "location"). And yet every time I save a project or export a .mp3 file, unless I browse to and select my D:../Documents folder, it saves to C:/Users/<user>/Documents/Audacity. I've been doing some timed recordings off the internet - 4-5 separate recordings over the last couple days, closing Audacity between times - and it keeps going back to the C: drive folder whenever I forget to explicitly browse to the D: folder in the save project and export fields in the timed recording dialog. It's driving me nuts. And no, I don't think modifying the registry every time I use Audacity is a good idea!
I don't know why Audacity has so much trouble with this - I use many many other programs, most of which save a data file, and all of them either default to what Windows thinks is the Documents folder (D: drive), or remember the last place I saved. I haven't done any programming recently - I've never worked on 7, let alone 8 or 10 - so I've no idea what's involved - but it's apparently hard-coded somewhere to go to the C: drive and that folder. It's not checking with Windows where the document folder is, let alone letting me set it. But letting me set the default folder would solve the problem (as long as that hardcoded C: drive setting is either removed or overridden...).

When exporting, Audacity should default to the directory last used for exporting. It seems there's a problem with your Audacity setup if that's not happening,

Re: Setting the Save Project Default file location
Yes, please add this. I'm syncing my documents folder between several computers, and have about 80 gib of audio saved in the Audacity folder. I've had to move it so one of the computers doesn't get the 80 gib of data it doesn't need - but Audacity keeps creating an empty folder in the docs folder and tries to sync to it.
Best would be to remember the last used directory - no preference setting required, no UI, etc.
