Exported MP3 files are empty

Post by Erin R » Thu Aug 14, 2014 4:14 pm

I have followed the steps to export MP3 files, but after the file exports it is blank.
I downloaded Audacity 2.0.5.0 via .exe installer and I downloaded lame_enc.dll. Both are in the Program Files (x86) folder.
LAME appears to be properly set: Audacity > Preferences > Libraries > MP3 Export Library Version: LAME 3.99.3
I have tried exporting using both Windows 7 pro and Mac OS X version 10.9.4

I appreciate any suggestions as to how I can fix this.

What happens if you open up the files in a fresh Audacity?

When I open the exported "blank" MP3 file in a new Audacity project, there is an Error Importing message: Audacity did not recognize the type of file. . . If it is uncompressed, try importing it using "Import Raw"

When I "import raw," the file is white noise.

New development:
The blank MP3 exports were originally: 1.An audacity recording that was 2. exported as an MP3 and then 3. uploaded to Audacity for editing (cut out a sample section) then 4. exported again as an MP3, which was then blank.

I just created a new Audacity project and exported to MP3 format. It worked. So. . .

It seems that I cannot take an MP3 file - load it in Audacity for editing, then export it as MP3. I must use the original Audacity file?

Another update: I just discovered the suggestion in one of the Audacity help tools to use mp3DirectCut for basic editing (cutting). This was just what I needed, so that solved the immediate need.

I'm still wondering if there is a way to import and MP3 file to Audacity, edit it, then export is as an MP3? This will be helpful for future projects.

Many thanks to the Audacity team!

You will need to stop being a moving target for a while.

You are suffering, I believe, from the Windows Handicap of not showing you accurate filenames. You can force Windows to do that, or you can download the Media Info program which will tell you what you really have.

http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

The top link is not Media Info. Pay attention.

==================================
Hidden File Extensions - Windows
-- Start > My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > [ ] Hide Extensions for Known File Types (deselect)
-- Apply (to this folder) or Apply to All Folders
-- OK

The practical effect of this Windows change is the filename MyMusic will turn into MyMusic.mp3, which is its real filename. Only I'm betting several of the files you think are MP3s are not.
