Our Italian language teacher has asked us to use this programme to record ourselves for pronunciation practice. I was wondering if it's virus free and harmless for my computer.

Provided that you download the official version (http://audacityteam.org/download/) then it is free of viruses and other malware. We cannot guarantee that versions from other sources will be.
Note that most download sites (including the official Audacity downloads) may have advertisements, including download links for other products. We cannot guarantee that such products are safe.
