Sounds like there is reverb on

Post by tommcw » Mon Feb 24, 2014 2:21 am

I am trying to remove pops from a recording of an old vinyl album. When editing them manually I was noticing something odd. I was removing the pops in the right channel, but could still hear the pops from the left channel in both ears. To verify what I was hearing I split the stereo tracks and put in a space of silence in the right track only. When I play back through my headphones I can hear what is in the left channel echoed in my right ear as though it were running through a reverb. I'm not using any reverb, so I'm confused about what is happening. I'm not sure if this is being caused by Audacity or by Windows or what. The output box on Audacity indicates it is going through Microsoft Sound Mapper. Does this program add some sort of reverb effect to headphones?

I'm running Audacity 2.0.5 on Windows 8.1

After much searching I solved the problem. The sound card driver was adding the reverb. I had to go into control panel and turn it off.

You probably have what I had. One of the Hardware Droids left "Theater Effects" running in the sound system when they gave the computer to me. The computer wouldn't pass any technical sound tests and it took me days to figure out why.

Dig around in the Windows Sound Control Panels.
