Confusion when mic is disconected and reconnected

Windows 7, Audacity 2.0.3.

Recording with a Blue Snowball.

It's too easy to knock the USB cable out of the back of the mic. If this happens during a session, and I reconnect and try to record again, I only get a flatline. I must exit and restart the program.

It's irritating but not debilitating.

No, you don't. You can Transport > Rescan Audio Devices. Restart Audacity is the simple, get-out-of-jail card, but it does take a little longer.

The cable should not fall out of the back of a snowball. You may have a damaged connector or cable.

You could try taping the lead to something solid so that it is less easily pulled out.

If it still gets pulled out, after reconnecting it, wait a moment for Windows to recognise it, then from the Transport menu select "Rescan Audio Devices", wait a moment, then check and if necessary re-select the USB microphone as the recording input in the Device Toolbar

Ah, thank you.

Perhaps something like "refresh audio devices list" might be a bit more self explanatory.
