Recording function

Help for Audacity on Windows.

Please state which version of Windows you are using,
and the exact three-section version number of Audacity from "Help menu > About Audacity".

Audacity 1.2.x and 1.3.x are obsolete and no longer supported. If you still have those versions, please upgrade at https://www.audacityteam.org/download/.
The old forums for those versions are now closed, but you can still read the archives of the 1.2.x and 1.3.x forums.

Recording function

I am a very new Audacity user. I just downloaded it. So here is newbie-type question. When I click on the Record button in Audacity, a box pops up saying "Error while opening sound device". I'm new to this, and I don't know what to do to solve this. Any help would be appreciated.

It would have helped if you had given the version of Windows and Audacity (please see the pink panel above).

I suggest you read this Frequently Asked Question:
