Why can't I delete ANYTHING???

Why can't I delete ANYTHING???
I am trying to edit out 5o seconds of a song for my dance classes, and I can highlight the music, but it will never let me delete, cut, do any of these options. What am I doing wrong????? I am so FRUSTRATED!!!!!!!!!!!

Press the "Stop" button.
Most functions are disabled during Play, Record and Pause.
