cannot paste in a track

cannot paste in a track
I feel rather foolish! New to audacity. Managed to copy a section of a track that I wish to duplicate (insert) into an earlier spot on that track. But I cannot figure out how to "stop the action" to complete the paste! Evidently, clicking on the spot I want to add the copied section to just starts the "Play" action. I feel like I am chasing the music!! What have I missed in the instructions?

Which version of Audacity are you using? Help > About.
