Background noise in vinyl

Post by rhkrhk » Sun Feb 24, 2013 8:29 pm

Recording vinyl produces a band of background noise, seen in the space between bands. This band measures about .1 on the left hand scale.
is it possible to remove this band without doing damage to the music?

If you haven't already tried it, check the item on the Effect menu called Noise Removal. This is exactly what it's for, but I think you will have to experiment with its settings to get the best result. I suspect every LP's noise will be a bit different. I've tried it a few times and it did have undesirable effects on the music itself. But I have a lot of LPs to convert and the noise wasn't bad enough to spend the time on optimising it, so I did without and moved on. I doubt it's possible to remove noise without ANY effect on the music.

Of course there is noise, it's analog vinyl! Did you expect digital quality? ;)

What does it sound like? A signal level of 0.1 seems unusually "loud". Are you hearing it, or just seeing it? I'm sort-of wondering if you have a DC offset (which doesn't make any noise). Usually, the constant background noise on vinyl is tolerable. And, the regular noise reduction filter can often work very well on low-level background noise. But like marshallarts says, sometimes the cure can be worse than the disease, especially if the noise is bad.

Vinyl clicks and pops can be much more annoying than the constant background noise. These require a different noise reduction algorithm. You can try the audacity Click Removal "effect", or there are other specialized applications for this.

Please, have a look at the following page:

http://gizmodo.com/5923930/how-to-digit ... collection

You’ll get good (and best) results if you get a (second-hand) turntable which outputs signal at "Line" level (i.e. it has a "Line Out" plug), and you connect it to a "Line In" entry on your PC. This kind of setup minimizes the background noise almost to nothing.

HTH.
Cheers,
Robert
