Exporting filenames and tags incorrectly

Audacity 2.0.2, EXE installer, XP, 32, SP3.

Sorry if this has already been posted. I did a search but couldn't find anything that addressed my specific question.

I imported multiple mp3s, edited a few of them, then attempted to export them one at a time. I did two or three before I noticed it was saving them all with the same filename & track title. Also, the track number was off by one on all of them. I checked the tags of the original files and they were okay. It doesn't do this if I work on one file at a time in the project window. Anyone know what might be up or if there's a remedy?

This limitation is noted in the Manual http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/me ... ditor.html . I can add your vote for metadata to be "per track" so we can see the possible demand for this feature.

Using one project window per file is one workaround.

If all your edits are to the entire file length you can preserve MP3 tags by using Chains applied to multiple files. See http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/ba ... ssing.html .

You might be able to do things like remove the starts and ends using batch processing, but you will need Nyquist plug-ins to perform effects on selections in the track. Please be very specific what effects you need if you are interested in that.

I tried a Chain with some FLACs and it just saved the whole project as one file.

The suggestion about Chains meant that you would use File > Edit Chains... to create a Chain that has the edit commands you need, plus an exportflac command at the end of the Chain.

Then you would use File > Apply Chain... , select the Chain you created, then choose "Apply to Files..." and select the files you want to apply the Chain to (so in your case, the files for each album track). You would not use the Audacity Import process at all.

This depends on the edits you want to make being for the whole of each imported file. You cannot specify to a command in a Chain that it should work on the first five seconds of the imported file or on or some other specified duration.

Some Nyquist effects that you can add to a Chain let you specify in the effect a length to apply the effect to, so that type of effect lets you operate on part of a track when applying a Chain to files.
