If you launch Audacity so it has only one window and don't touch it further, are there still two Audacity icons in the "Applications" tab of Task Manager?rj7500 wrote:Only one copy of Audacity was running at the time but look at the symbols to the left of each 'Audacity". That comes up in the task manager each time Audacity tells me it's not responding.
Do you always quit Audacity before leaving overnight? If so the problem may be nothing to do with programs running overnight, but with restarting Audacity without reboot. You could test by leaving Audacity running overnight (File > Close Project but don't FIle > Exit).rj7500 wrote:Ok, well I thought I had this thing solved this morning...........there were only 2 programs running overnight, a weather station and Incredimail. I disabled both and lo and behold Audacity ran as it should. I disabled them again this afternoon and just now I check and as usual, it came up, 'not responding again...........we're back to square one, I'm afraid.
OK then it seems to be a sound device problem. Exactly what are the recording and playback devices in Device Toolbar? If those are an external device, disconnect that device then restart Audacity to see what happens with the inbuilt sound device.rj7500 wrote:In the 'unresponsive mode............clicking Tone works but no functions of the transport work.
Thanks, but not much, beyond it is probably an "illegal memory access violation". Appcompat.txt is unlikely to contain any useful information, but to know whether it highlights some .dll or process that is causing a problem, you would have to attach the actual appcompat.txt file (its location is shown in your picture).rj7500 wrote:Does this help?

Did you also get that exception error accompanying that non-responding error?rj7500 wrote:I found the problem seems to occur not only overnight but when I leave the computer alone for more that a short time.....( at least 2 hrs). When the problem does occur, using the onboard sound card, as opposed to the PreSonus outboard unit works....which gave me the impression that the problem was related to the PreSonus to begin with.
Let's take an example......Audacity has been closed now for about 5 hours, the computer has been open and online. I just attempted to open Audacity and when I did and I tried to begin a project by clicking on the record button, I got the usual not responding message for which the only cure is to restart the computer. As far as I can see, no other programs are having problems at the same time.
