Audacity Stops Working While Exporting

I have tried everything, but Audacity (pick a version. I am running 2.0, but I've tried others, too), but whenever I try to export what I have recorded, in Audacity, the program fails. It will export in .wav, but no other format. As long as Audacity is resident on the hard drive, no audio converter will work either. If Audacity is uninstalled, other audio converters work just fine. I have also gone to Sourceforge, and gotten the "official" version of Lame, but still no luck.

My event viewer doesn't work (the mmc snap in failed), otherwise, I'd put that info here, too.

Any ideas?

What operating system? Music Export works against the operating system which is...?
Other audio converters such as... ?

In other words, you couldn't make an MP3?

Does it export FLAC?

My PC is a Dell XPS 410, running Windows 7. I can't remember which audio converter was being used when I uninstalled Audacity. It was totally free, and I got it from an Audacity page. At the time that Audacity failed, I was trying to export an mp3 file, only because that operation is relatively basic. I don't think it worked with FLAC files, but I'll try it again to be sure.

There are many different "builds" of LAME. Some work with Audacity and some don't. This one does: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ: ... g-Ins#lame

I was trying to export an mp3 file, only because that operation is relatively basic.

Actually, that's the one that reqires special downloads and extra software installs. WAV and FLAC are internal.

I did get the version of Lame that Steve mentioned. In fact, I already had it. It didn't work, so I downloaded, and tried 3.98 That didn't work either. I figured that wav, and FLAC were different, because they didn't seem to need an external codec. From what I can tell, Audacity works just fine, while Lame seems to be my issue. Correct?

Audacity natively supports WAV, FLAC, AIFF, OGG for both import and export, so you should have no problem any of these formats.
Audacity can import MP3 format, but cannot Export MP3 without a suitable build of LAME being properly installed.

The version of LAME that I posted the link for does work, though sometimes getting it installed correctly can be a bit tricky.

I would suggest that you try uninstalling all versions of LAME from your computer, then very carefully install "Lame_v3.99.3_for_Windows.exe" (ensure that it is exactly this version that you have) by precisely following the first 4 step instructions on this page: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ: ... g-Ins#lame
Don't take any short-cuts - follow the instructions word for word and the installation should succeed.

If that fails, uninstall LAME and carefully follow the "Troubleshooting" steps (on the same page).
