Multitrack recording 8 channels on a Win 7 64 bit laptop (Dual Core Intel with 2 GB mem) with Audacity 2.0

Could get employee price on a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R

OR wait for the Behringer Firepower 1616fca which is designed to run on Audacity 2.0

IF the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R multitracks with Audacity 2.0 well then I'll go that way otherwise I have to buy Protools MP9 or 10.

That were kinda vague about how it all ended up with the 8R.

M-Audio devices usually record multiple channels into Audacity as shipped if you use older M-Audio drivers. This is therefore not expected to work on Windows 7. See http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Multi ... ed_devices .

I don't know in what sense 1616 is designed to run on 2.0, except that Behringer include it. I suggest you ask them if the 1616 can record multiple channels into Audacity 2.0 as shipped.

The only almost guaranteed way to record multiple channels with Audacity is to get your hands dirty and compile it with ASIO support - see http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/ASIO_Audio_Interface .

I'd be very interested to see what happens when Behringer releases the 1616fca considering they are advertising on their site that they will use "free" software

One would assume that they will make the following list of Suggested devices

"Occasionally, sound card or device manufacturers provides full EWDM support in their drivers, and then multi-channel recording in Audacity should work. The following cards/devices are reported to provide multi-channel recording in "out-of-the box" Audacity"

but you're right, thats just an assumption & one would have to talk to Behringer to ensure that... thanks for that clarification.
