Is the bug with Mac or Audacity? Audacity intends to turn the system volume down.

You can always try 1.3.12 or even 1.2.6 from http://code.google.com/p/audacity/downloads/list?can=4 .

1.3.12 may have more bugs than 1.2.6. You can let us know if it makes any difference.

Have you looked in the Realtek Control Panel (in the Windows Control Panel) for any clues?

If you are still stuck please give us the content of Help > Audio Device Info from the Audacity menu bar and an image of what you see when you go to Sounds and Audio Devices then press "Volume" in the "Sound playback" panel.

Since I last posted here, my friend and I deleted 2.0.0 from her machine and installed 1.2.6. It's working fine for her.

I'm considering updating 2.0.0 to 2.0.1 on my machine and am wondering if I should do that now or wait 'til some of the bugs are out of it. Also wondering if she might get sound from 2.0.1, where she can't with 2.0.0.

Gale, thanks for mentioning the Realtek Audio Manager in Control Panel. I hadn't looked at that before, but will when she and I get back in touch in a few days (she's been out of town). I was also unfamiliar with the Audio Device info under help. I would always look for something like that under settings, tools, preferences, or options in a program. It may help me in the future, now that I know where to look.

As I said, 1.2.6 is working for her now.

There isn't any known bug where the audio device selected in Audacity produces no sound.

Nothing obviously relevant to such an issue changed between 2.0.0 and 2.0.1, but it is always best to upgrade to the latest version. You can read what fixed and was changed in 2.0.1 here:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Relea ... _and_2.0.1 .

If you wanted to, it might be interesting to download the zip of 2.0.0 on her computer. She can then run 2.0.0 as a standalone and it will not affect the 1.2 installation in any way. If 2.0.0 produces sound after the system runs 1.2.6, it might tell us something. She can "try" the zip of 2.0.1 in the same way without installing it.

Yes but it isn't settings as the Devices Preferences are, where you can change devices and parameters. Audio Device Info is just a verbose listing of information about the audio devices which Audacity can detect. Another possible place to put it would be the View menu.
