I'd rather the Cancel button was greyed out than removed.
I agree - another alternative would be to leave the cancel button as-is but pop up a dialog box to ask the user if they want to keep or ditch the recording made thus far - thoughts?
I've since made that alternative suggestion to Vaughan (though I had not read these Forum posts at that point). Although from our perspective it's expected to have a Cancel button in a progress dialogue, I agree with Steve that the user will see the Timer Record Progress much more like a transport control. So a control that almost wipes the recording beyond rescue is not expected by most users. If this was expected, we'd have a Cancel button in Transport Toolbar.

I only suggested removing the Cancel button from "Timer Record Progress". I would expect that users might cancel the "Waiting to Start" dialogue - that should remain as now.

I cannot see any operational purpose in greying the Cancel button in the Timer Record Progress rather than hiding it. I agree it might be more consistent to grey Cancel given the recording progress can follow the "Waiting to Start" progress which should have a Cancel button. But just having Stop is less confusing still - it encourages thinking of Stop like the yellow Stop button.

You can do anything if you are panicking. We can grey out the close button and prevent ESC cancelling the recording if we want to - see the Automatic Crash Recovery dialogue which does this.

I still think it needs a bug report, whatever the proposed solution.

Well who knew that? You learn a little every day. :geek:

BTW this is then inconsistent with a normal record session where ESC does nothing.

But I do note the ESC will cancel an Effect or Analyze that is in progress - I never knew that either :o

Actually I see this as unncessary and irrelevant. The Cancel button is important and useful and important in the "Waiting to Start" box, it is essential in the "set up" box as that has no little "X" in the top-right corner.

Once the TR session has started there would be no circumstance or time at which the Cancel button became ungreyed so thus it could be said to be redundant in the Progress box.

Accordingly I have updated the Timer Record proposal in the Wiki to advocate removal of that button (despaite Vaughan's earlier misgivings.
1) There is a de facto cancel by using the little "X" in the top-right corner
2) The user can achieve the same effect if required by using the "Stop" and then deleting the track. This is much safer and more transparent to the user.

While I was there I added a further sub-proposal to reduce the width of the Progess box, it is ridiculously oversized (Bill's comment on the image that I put in the documentation led me to that conclusion, thanks for the nudge Bill).

Update: and I have posted to the Quality email thread on this topic.

Thanks,
Peter.

Just to update this, the "Cancel" button has been removed from the progress dialogue while the recording is taking place, in recognition of the risk.

The keyboard escape key now does the same as "Stop" (stops the recording and leaves the recording on screen). Use the window Close button if you want to stop the recording and also remove the track.
