Questions about switching to Audacity 2.0 from 1.3.7 on XP

Post by Thunderbolt1000T » Wed May 16, 2012 6:05 pm

I have a fiew questions before switching from 1.3.7 to 2.0. I'm using Windows XP Home and JAWS 7.10. Is 2.0 going to work with my setup? Do I need to uninstall 1.3.7 before installing 2.0? Also, this may seem like a silly question, but where do I get the latest version of the LAME DLL and FFMpeg?

You can install Audacity 2.0 with Audacity 1.3.7 still installed. Audacity 2.0 will not overwrite Audacity 1.3.7
The only problem with not uninstalling 1.3.7 is that Windows can only associate file types with one version of Audacity, so for the other version you will need to open projects from the File menu.

Audacity 2.0 should work OK with Jaws, but please report any difficulties that you encounter.

Audacity 2.0 will probably work correctly with your current version of Lame and FFMpeg, but if you have difficulties please see here for how to install the current versions:

I haven't checked this topic for a while because my old email address was disabled for some reason, and I never got a reply notification.

I will need to install the latest version of LAME, because I never did it when I upgraded from 1.3.5 to 1.3.7. Could someone please give me the link where I can get the DLL?

Also, how do I get Windows to associate file types with Audacity 2 instead of the older version?

See the links in my previous post.

The Audacity 2.0.2 installer will sort out the file associations for Audacity Projects (.AUP files).
That is the only file association that Audacity makes. Did you manually add other file associations (for example to WAV or MP3 files)?

When I right click a file, click Open With, then click Audacity in Windows, it opens in the older version of Audacity. How do I get it to open in the newer version automaticly?

It is better to uninstall 1.3.7.

Is this an AUP file or a WAV or MP3?

If it is an AUP file then selecting the AUP and double-clicking it should (I think) open it in 2.0.2.

If it is an audio file like WAV or MP3 you can rename the 2.0.2 "audacity.exe" to some other name (for example, audacity_2.0.2.exe), then you can add the new association for the renamed 2.0.2 executable. If you update Audacity, you will have to rename the updated audacity.exe to the same name you used before, or add a new association.

Alternatively you can download and run this registry file:
http://forum.audacityteam.org/download/file.php?id=5279 .

Rename it to "AudacityAssociationCleaner.reg" after download.

Or you can install CCleaner:
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

and run its Registry cleaner.

You should be logged in as administrator to run the above Registry tools.
