recording from my turnrable

Hi. I'm trying to use Audacity with my Vista laptop to convert a vinyl LP to digital. I've got lead from the headphone socket of the stereo to microphone socket on the lap top but there is no "line in" option as the input source on the Audacity mixer toolbar or in preferences. I've downloaded the Realtek HD Audio manager and enabled "tie up same type of input jacks, ie line-in or microphone, as an input device" but doesn't seem to help when I use this as input device in Audacity. Just get random staticAny body help me with what I'm doing wrong please?
