Cannot Save File or Export

Audacity 2.0.0

I'm very new at manipulating audio files. I mostly have used Audacity to select clips from some favorite music and make ring tones from them. Now, I'm trying to convert some old cassette tapes to MP3. Some are music and some are not. I will not violate any copyright restrictions or impinge on any intellectual property rights. The results will be for my use only but I need them in a more modern format and media.

I've been able to connect my cassette player to the PC (Line In) and have an entire 27 minute cassette in Audacity as I write this. I selected the part I want to save - a very long segment - and tried to Edit/Remove_Audio/Trim but the Trim dropped down menu is greyed out. On the File menu, the only option available is Import or Exit.

Can anyone give me hints for what to look for to fix this? Is there something I should have done before recording other than open a new file?

TIA
-rh

You need to be in Stop mode for most things to work in Audacity, not Pause mode.

Thanks, Bill!

I figured it out before my OP was approved. I was going to post what I found but you beat me to it.
