Recording from computer output

I'm using Audacity 2.0 in XP Pro on a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop with legacy audio drivers. I'm trying to use Audacity to record sound directly from the computer output--e.g., mp3 files. On my old Dell desktop I could do this with SoundForge, but neither SoundForge nor Audacity will do it on the laptop. I'm assuming the audio drivers aren't set up to do that. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
s.

Some newer Windows machines "leave out" the ability to do that.
