Overdub not working

Hi there,
My system is audacity 2.4.2 on windows 10.
I use to record interface evo4 with microphone plugged into it.
My settings:
Windows direct sound
Mic line 1/2
1 or 2 recording channels
Main output 1/2 audient evo 4

Situation
- i record a backing track from computer. Working well alone, i can hear it fine.
- i record myself with mic fine independently
My problem
- but i cannot hear the backing track besides it is running which i need to hear while recording
What i tried
- put overdub on, but then i receive message « unanticipated host error » and then « error code 0 success »
- software playthrough off
- restart all

You are correct that "Overdub" must be enabled.

The error may be due to the sound card settings in Windows.

To open the Windows Sound control panel:

1. open the run dialog with Windows logo + R
2. enter: mmsys.cpl
3. press the OK button

Check that the audient evo 4 is set to use 44100 Hz sample rate in both the Recording tab and the Playback tab.

Sorry I just spotted that.
Does that setting use the audient evo 4?
To hear the live input without a delay, you have to use the same device for both recording and playback.

"Listen to this device" must be OFF (not enabled) for all recording devices in the Windows Sound control panel.

Windows direct sound

I would generally recommend using "MME" rather than "direct sound" because "direct sound" is only emulated in Windows Vista and later.
(It probably won't make any difference, but just as a general point )

Only, when i choose mme, instead of receiving message of error, the red dot stays on the begining of the track, does not move and it is not possible to record.

Please post the "Audio Device Info" (from Audacity's "Help menu > Diagnostics")

"Audio Device Info" is a diagnostic tool. If you post that info here on the forum it may give us a clue as to what the problem is.

Check that the audient evo 4 is set to use 44100 Hz sample rate in both the Recording tab and the Playback tab.

Also, check that the Audacity Project Rate is set to 44100 Hz in the lower left-hand corner of the screen and that the track you are playing is also at 44100 Hz. (Keep at 32-bit float).

Please post the "Audio Device Info" (from Audacity's "Help menu > Diagnostics")

To collect this info, when the Audio Device Info is displayed, press Ctrl+A, then Ctrl+C. Then when you are posting in this forum, click the button "</>", then press Ctrl-V.

If you haven't already done so, here are a couple of other things to try:
1) Windows WASAPI
2) Try using your PC's headphones as your output device (and specify in Device Control Panel).
3) If you are using "R" to record, try using "Ctrl+R".
4) Try 1-channel only, with mono, "1" on evo4, "2 channel, 16-bit 44100 Hz (CD Quality)" in mmsys.cpl.
