Help with reducing 2 loud SCUFF sounds on a recording for a Christmas Gift

Post by superCWdad » Wed Dec 23, 2020 7:46 am

Hello and let me first start off by thanking anyone who reads this and for anyone that can provide me some insight.

I have a short file of my son singing Frosty the Snowman I am putting into a Christmas project for the grandparents and there are two sections where I scuffed the microphone on my cellphone and it is jarringly loud. The first noise is at 4 seconds and the second is at 13.5 seconds.

I was looking for some technical know how on the process of reducing the overall amplitude of the noise hopefully without the need to diminish or destroy the vocal portion of my son singing. I have included the two sections here, the whole file is 5.10 Mb and I could not upload the whole file here, if someone would be willing to provide the know how I would appreciate it.

Thank you so much and have a wonderful holiday!

I used Multi-vie for combined Spectogram and waveform view (you can select that by clicking in the track name toi get the track's dropdown menu)

The bright red shows clearly the extent of the scuff - so I selected that and then used Ctrl+K to delete that section

I then zoomed in a long way and observed a small disjoint where the two sides of the waveform did not match entirely (will cause a click)

I then selected a few samplesaround that area and used Effect > Repair
Scuff deleted disjoint repaired.png
Scuff deleted disjoint repaired.png (39.44 KiB) Viewed 116 times
And now it sounds like this:

@Waxcylinder

Thank you very much for this tutorial, I successfully followed your detailed post and fixed both scuffs in the audio and it sounds great!

I really appreciate your time and knowledge you gave to me and anyone else who may have a similar issue they would like fixed.

Have a great holiday season and Love to you and your family.
