Starts with:
Windows 8.1 becomes corrupted in HP laptop
Windows 8.1 restored
Audacity edit function at least cut and paste disrupted
If trying to sync up two tracks I cannot work in a single track
i cant add a track and paste into it without the first track shifting forward in time to the end of the paste
I cannot delete dead portions of a single track without deleting active portions of the other track as well
When I try to highlight one track the other track shows ghosted clocks
when highlighting for edit the color is grey blue not white
Have reloaded Audacity multiple times
Have reloaded older versions multiple times
have now upgraded to windows 10
The problem still exists
I have a desktop windows 10 and a laptop windows 7 that both work fine.
Where do I even begin to look

Could be Tracks > Sync-Lock Tracks

On 2.4.2, try Tracks > Reset Configuration.
I hope this helps.

That is "Sync-Lock". Turn that off in the "Tracks" menu.

That sounds like the track is muted.
See:
https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/aud ... .html#mute
If you have Audacity 2.4.2, resetting Audacity would probably be a good idea.
See:
https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/res ... ation.html
If you don't yet have Audacity 2.4.2 (the current version) you can get it via the Audacity website:
https://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows/
(Note that we have received multiple reports of faults in the unofficial Windows Store version, and we are not able to provide support for that version)

Thanks for catching that, steve, that's what I said, "Tools > Reset Configuration"

Anyway, they both begin with a "T".

"Tools > Reset Configuration"
That's fine, so long as the person has Audacity 2.4.2 ("Reset Configuration" is a new feature).
I think it's generally good to give appropriate links to the manual as that provides additional background information and a reference if they need to find it again. Also, if the feature changes in future versions of Audacity, the post will then link to the updated version, so it gives forum answers greater longevity.
It's good to see another regular contributor to the forum posting helpful replies jademan

Unlike some others I know, this won't be forever (100,000 posts!). I have an ulterior motive, you know.

When I first started answering questions on the forum, my "ulterior motive" was to get to know Audacity better.

When I first started answering questions on the forum, my "ulterior motive" was to get to be on "the leader board" the first page of top contributors -
but then I am very competitive ...
And then dear old Gale hooked me and reeled me in ...
And the rest is history as they say ...
Peter.
