Track gets unselected

Help for Audacity on Windows.

Track gets unselected

I am on Windows 10, Audacity 2.4.2. I am a total newbie. Every time I try to use the Start and End of Select to get a specific range to edit, I lose the selection of the track itself. So I can't delete, copy or really do anything with the selection. I have read or viewed a whole bunch of instructions and videos to see how to keep the track selected, but none of the instructions I have read go past specifying the range. I have tried selecting the track then setting the range, setting the range then selecting the track, and other combinations, but nothing seems to work. What am I missing????? Many thanks.

Left click on the blue waveform.
Drag your mouse right or left while holding down the left mouse button.
Release the mouse button.
