remove a section in the middle of an mp3

Post by jack magee » Wed Aug 14, 2019 3:18 pm

Say you want to remove a section in the middle of an mp3.Is there any way to make a mark on the wave form where the cut will start and then move the marker to where it will end . Then cut.

In Solveigmm video splitter you can click to where you want the cut. add begin marker. move to where the cut ends. add end marker. And you can move the markers. Does audacity have anything like this?

A mark won't be made - but just click where you want to start and drag to where you want the cut to end - the selection will be highlighted.

To delete it jus use shortcut Ctrl + K or the Delete key

In Audacity, you make a "Selection".

How I usually do it (there's lots of possible variations, and as you get used to the program you will discover what works best for you):
I have keyboard shortcuts set to the "Full" set of defaults, which makes step 5 easier (see: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/key ... ts_buttons)

1) Zoom out far enough to see the entire part that I want to select ("Ctrl + Mouse" wheel to zoom, or "Ctrl + F" to fit the entire track)

2) Make a rough selection by clicking on the track at the start of the bit you want to move, and drag to the end of the part you want to remove.
This selection only needs to be approximate - this step takes about 1 second.

3) Zoom in on the start of the selection ("Ctrl + Mouse wheel")

4) Hold down the "shift" key and click near the start of the selection. This will "grab" the start of the selection so that you can adjust it to the exact right place.

5) If you have the "Full" set of keyboard shortcuts, press "Ctrl + ]" to skip to the end of the selection.
If you don't have the full set of shortcuts, you can "View menu > Skip To > Selection End",
or
Zoom out and zoom in on the end of the selection,
or
Scroll to the end of the selection ("Shift + Mouse wheel", or drag the scroll bar at the bottom of the tracks window).

6) Hold down the "shift" key and click near the end of the selection. This will "grab" the end of the selection so that you can adjust it to the exact right place.

To test the cut before cutting it, press the "C" key. This will play a few seconds before the selected region, and play as if the selection had been deleted. Tweak the ends of the selection as necessary, then press the "Del" key to delete.

The whole process takes only a few seconds.

In Audacity, "markers" are called "Labels".
Labels are extremely versatile and have many uses.
