Editing Recordings - Overwrite & Insert

I’m using Audacity 2.3.0.

With an existing recording, how do you overwrite? I’m not talking about pasting in a clip, just simply recoding over exsiting sound. Also let me know, please, how to insert sound.

When I’ve tried to do this, the overwrite sound just gets pasted at the end, not at the required place.

Incidentally, can I set my preferences so that I’m emailed when there is a response on the forum to my post?

Record to a new track (“Shift + Record button” or “Shift + R”), and silence the part that you want to replace (several ways to do that, including: select the part, then “Ctrl + L”).

If you describe what you are actually trying to do, then someone may be able to give tips about which method / workflow to use.
