Help with really bad conversation recording

Audacity version 2.2.2

I am a begginer when it comes to audio editing. I have a really bad conversation recording.
It was not recorded intentionally but it is really important that I need to understand what was said.
Most of the recordings are too quiet and some of the words are missing too, plus some of the words sound distort.
I try to use

  1. noise reduction
  2. Amplify
  3. Compresso
  4. Equalization
    5.normalize

But I still can not understand half of it. Is there anything else I should be doing? Please help

NB: amplifying the noise-floor & noise-reduction can create Rorschach audio.
like the inkblots where people impose meaning on what is essentially a random pattern.
